This area is the downstairs part of the extension the Sheridan’s attached to the back of the house. There is an electric wringer washing machine and a mangle iron.
As another indication of the Sheridan’s wealth, note the “larder.” If you look on the outside of the house, you’ll see a square hatch high up on the wall. That’s where the iceman would bring a block of ice, put it through that outside hatch, [open the door] where it would drop down onto the top bin of the walk-in ice chest, and eventually melt away through the back pipe. Even in its disrepair, you can still feel the insulated benefits of this INDOOR early “refrigerator,” which also had hanging meat hooks.
Note the large butter churn. Rocking the baby on top of the churn was one of its side jobs.
